Because I know about the many benefits chiropractic care has for humans, when I had the opportunity to get my American Pit Bull Terrier Pokey adjusted by Dr. Theresa as a young puppy, I jumped at the chance. Initially, I just wanted to make sure that he was in the best shape he could be to start with and to make sure his alignment was right. After that, I chose to have him adjusted by Dr. Theresa on a regular monthly basis so that he would continue to be in alignment, especially considering how hard he played. I also knew that he was going to be a big strong dog, and wanted him to continue to be comfortable with her and trust her in the event he was hurt so that she could work easily with him.

I am so glad I did that, because he DID get hurt. One Thursday night, he was playing with his Extreme Kong, and instead of picking it up long-ways and pinching it in his jaw, he managed to get it in his mouth up-right. He bit down on it and pinched it slightly, but even as strong as he is, he couldn’t hold it for long. The Kong rebounded and threw his head back, giving him whiplash. I was home for only a few minutes when I realized something wasn’t right – he kept pawing roughly at his ear, shaking his head and kept having spasms in his neck that caused his head to jerk towards his shoulder. He only slept for 10 or 20 minutes at a time that night; then he was up trying to get comfortable again, pawing, shaking and going into spasms all over again. The next morning he wasn’t even interested in playing.

Dr. Theresa saw Pokey that Friday afternoon. He trusted her enough to let her do some work with him, even though he was obviously in a lot of pain because of his jaw and neck injuries. She gave him enough relief that day that he was able to go home and sleep for almost 4 hours until it was time for his dinner. He wasn’t 100%, but he definitely was better after that first adjustment.

She saw him the following Tuesday and worked extensively with him. After that adjustment, he was doing so much better, she was able to wait to see him for over a week. After that, it was back to 2 weeks, then a month.

I know that if he hadn’t been able to trust “his Dr. T,” he wouldn’t have been able to get out of pain as quickly as he was able to. Without that trust, it would have taken a lot longer, with more than 3 treatments, because he wouldn’t have allowed her to do what she needed to do. He also would have likely had to go to his regular vet to get pain-killers and/or anti-inflammatories, just to get him comfortable enough to be touched to get adjusted.

Pokey still sees Dr. Theresa every 4-6 weeks, usually with no major problems for her to work out. And that large Extreme Kong he hurt himself with? It got donated to a shelter and replaced with an XXL Extreme Kong, because if he did it once, he could do it again.
